An 1859 Half Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria. This half sovereign features the young head design by William Wyon on the obverse and the shield design on the reverse.
The lack of mintmark denotes this coin was produced at the London Mint. Approximately 2,203,813 of these Half Sovereign gold coins were produced, making it a fairly common coin.
This was the first year that a dot features on the cross on the reverse of the coin. The dot is found on the vertical axis, just above the centre of the cross.
