History of the 50 Pesos Gold Coin

If you are looking for an investment coin, the 50 Pesos Gold is a must-have among investors. Since its appearance in 1921 – to celebrate the centennial of Mexican independence – until today, it has been prized for its value and relative accessibility when trading as an investment coin.

The Peso is the official currency of Mexico. The 50 Peso Gold coin, called "Centenario" or "winged victory", was first minted in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexican independence. It is often called "Centenario" in honor of this anniversary.

Well known to collectors, the 50 Pesos in Gold was struck for the first time in 1921, which earned it the name "Centenario" which is attributed to it both in Mexico and among informed numismatists. An investment coin if ever there was one, it presents on the obverse a winged Victory, an allegorical goddess carrying a laurel crown victoriously won against the Spanish. The other symbol of a broken chain pays homage to this freedom conquered after several years of war for independence.

In the background of this emblematic figure, are engraved in landscape the Popocatépetl and the Iztaccíhuatl), two famous volcanoes of Mexico. Also inscribed are the date of independence of 1821 as well as the issue date of the investment coin. The weight of fine gold is also engraved, that is 37.5gr Oro Puro.

The reverse of the 50 Pesos Gold features an eagle perched on a cactus and holding a snake in its beak. These Mexican symbols are also found on the country's flag, emblematic of pre-Hispanic culture. This emblem is surrounded by the words "ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS". Finally, the edge features an inscription in capital letters "INDEPENDENCIA Y LIBERTAD" which obviously bears witness to the historical reference to the struggles for independence.

Minted several times until 1931, the 50 Pesos Gold is considered a premium investment coin. Its gold purity even earned it the nickname "mini-ingot". In 1931, the global economic crisis temporarily slowed down the minting of the coin, which was nevertheless resumed in 1943 in order to meet strong demand.
